List your Go event/news In the E-Journal: email details to us at MAILTO:journal@usgo.org GO NEWS Ratings vs. Rank In our RATINGS UPDATE section last week, we mistakenly listed the new ranks – as opposed to ratings -- of members who had recently played in their first rated events. What's the difference? "The AGA does not award or recognize ranks," says AGA President Roy Laird. "Scoring +6.x, for example, does not make a person a 6-Dan." The term "rating," Laird explains, measures a player's performance in a given tournament on a given day, using a particular set of data that includes other tournament data. The AGA rates players. The term "rank" is a more comprehensive measure of a person's performance over time. Presently Go players set their own ranks, based on criteria including but not limited to tournament performance, club play, their opinion of their ability, and possibly the opinion of a pro. "The AGA may decide to award rank diplomas in the future using a more comprehensive set of criteria," Laird concludes. Go Congress Favorites: Last Chance!
