"I ran into a small article on page 22 in the June, 2000 issue of the ASME's Mechanical Engineering magazine," reports Houston's MIKE PENG. "Here is the whole content:" Computerized Go Not So Far Off A computer is within reach that can hold its own with the best players of Go, an ancient Asian game considerably more complex than chess, according to Donald Wunsch, a professor of computer engineering at the University of Missouri in Rolla, Mo. Many of the world's leading Go players claim it will be a century before such a computer is made, but Wunsch disagrees. He is an expert in the field of intelligent computer agents. Go is a strategy game involving two players. They take turns placing their markers, called stones, on a board with grid lines. The objective is to control the largest part of the board. The creation of a computer that can play such a game will involve an adaptive computer system that is much more intelligent than today's best computers. Wunsch said. To succeed at Go, the system would have to be intelligent enough to learn the game, adapt to changing conditions, anticipate several possible moves, and evaluate the playing board, called the Goban, to determine which side is winning and which side is losing, he said. "A masterful Go machine is going to require more human knowledge than chess requires, and chess requires a lot of human knowledge." Wunsch said. Although he said programmers have a long way to go before designing a computer that can play Go, Wunsch doesn't expect that technology to take 100 years to develop. "We need to create logical systems that are able to embrace contradictions as humans do," he added. That skill is essential to playing Go. SCOREBOARD: Tournament Winner Reports JULY 15: GUEULE DE BOIS Chicago, IL; TD: Bob Barber; 33 players "Craftily timing our Summer tournament for the first day of Summer Go Camp, we ensured that those darn kids wouldn't beat us this time," says BOB BARBER. "We have a new 6-dan in our neighborhood, SORIN GHERMAN. He won all four of his games, and First Place Dan Division." "I've always heard that those University of Chicago folks were smart," Bob continues, "and two of our three Kyu Division winners hail from there: KEVIN WHYTE 1K (not kyu for long, I suspect), new to Chicago, and JIANHUA LI 6 Kyu. Both of these gents won all four of their games. Also undefeated was Rich Brown 4 Kyu from Wisconsin." "Next time," Bob promises, "we'll have to let the kids back in." Robert J.
