ONLINE GO: Social Dynamics of The Zone and Yahoo Last week we compared the social dynamics of the "client dependent" servers IGS and NNGS. This week we take a look at the "web-based" servers The Zone and Yahoo. These servers are not only for playing Go, but offer many other games such as chess, hearts, and backgammon. Therefore, you will meet people who are totally new to the game of Go, making The Zone and Yahoo perfect venues for capturing the interest of new Go players and to practice your teaching skills. It is not unusual for someone to sit down at your table and ask, "How do you play this game?" This affords even weak players with opportunities to teach and to point newbies to www.usgo.org. But don't think that web-based servers are not for serious players. There are a surprising number of strong players who frequent The Zone and Yahoo including the occasional pro. The "kibbitz" command was mentioned as a means of discussing games on IGS and NNGS out of "earshot" of the players. No such command exists on either the Zone or Yahoo. Instead, observers sit at a table with the players. Everything they say can be seen by the players as well as by other observers. Discussion between players can be seen by the observers as well. Escaping (leaving a game to avoid loss) is more common on the web-based servers, but can be regarded as the "highest form of resignation". If you think of it that way you can take it more lightly, as you'll find that many players on The Zone and Yahoo are unfamiliar with the etiquette of Go. If IGS is like a large city and NNGS is like a small town, The Zone and Yahoo might be characterized as the Wild West with enclaves of close-knit communities and the occasional marauding desperado. You will run into your share of tricksters and mean spirited players, yet you may become a part of a small close group. NOTE: We have received a number of questions and comments about the new Kiseido server. I have started to spend some time there, and plan to offer coverage about this still sparsely populated (but promising) server in the near future. But why wait for my review? Be a pioneer and head on over to http://kgs.kiseido.com Terri Schurter has been playing Go online since 1996. Her Go club, Wings Across Calm Waters, is a "virtual" chapter of the AGA. Wings meets week-nights on the Zone from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm Eastern Time. Terri plays under the name goddess_of_go.
