ONLINE GO: NNGS by Terri Schurter The second server I played on was NNGS, and by the summer of 1996, I had developed a preference for this server because of its friendly atmosphere. I had been troubled by some unpleasant experiences on IGS involving the behavior of some players who would beat me up and leave me to bleed without comment. In contrast, I found that NNGS players had a nearly universal willingness to chat after (and even during) a game. I also enjoyed chatting on Channel 99, where I got to know many regular players (Once you have joined a channel on NNGS you are automatically returned to it when you log back onto the server). The ratings on NNGS are slightly tougher than those of the AGA, but not nearly as tough as on IGS. You can view player information by typing "stats " where is the username of the person you want to find out about (User data can be viewed on IGS using the same command). You can also check a player's strength by checking out a graph of the progress of their rating over time. As on IGS, you may choose to have an NR (non-rated) account, and may register multiple accounts. You can arrange to play handicap games and a unique feature of NNGS is the "suggest" command, which will recommend a handicap for you with another rated player and will even suggest positive or negative komi of fewer than 5.5 points if necessary. Set the time limits for games using a combination of regular clock time and byo yomi, which is Canadian (25 stones within a self-set period of time). Although many players prefer fast games on NNGS, it may be easier to find a slow game there than on IGS, although your chances of finding someone of your own rank to play it with are lower since there are many fewer players on the server. Terri Schurter has been playing Go online since 1995. Her Go club, Wings Across Calm Waters, is a "virtual" chapter of the AGA. Wings meets week-nights on the Zone from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm Eastern Time. Terri plays under the name goddess_of_go. GET LISTED & BOOST TURN-OUT! Got an upcoming event?
