"We'd like to get some feedback regarding the information for contacting chapters and clubs on the Chapters page on the AGA's web site," reports Chapter Coordinator Bill Cobb. "Do people find it useful to have the regular mailing address of the contact person, or is the email address and phone number enough? Cutting out the mailing addresses would reduce the clutter on the Chapters page." Let Bill Cobb know what you think at wmscobb@rcn.com . SAN CRISTOBAL DE LA HABANA 2001 Peter Shotwell reports that "U.S. players can attend this legally just like we did in the US-Cuba matches in July, which were fabulous, btw!! Let me know if you are interested in the FOURTH INTERNATIONAL GO TOURNAMENT, January 3-7, 2001 in Havana, CUBA" Contact Peter at shotwell@ix.netcom.com GO ON YE OLDE SOD For those who like to plan even further ahead, the next European Go Congress will be in Ireland: http://ireland.european-go.rog/ CAMPAIGN 2000: Election Strengthens AGA By Jeff Shaevel Congratulations, Roy! And congratulations to all the members of the AGA! This campaign was not undertaken as a failed bid for the presidency, but as a successful bid to elevate the office of the presidency. I feel we have benefited from this election. I believe that without my running we would most likely not have a committee re-evaluating our by-laws and working hard to improve the processes under which we govern this organization. More people than ever are thinking about the AGA and how it operates, and how we can work together to make it better. Perhaps best of all, we have gotten to know Roy better and he has learned just how well liked and respected he is. These things cannot help but strengthen our organization and the people in it. Running for office has accomplished everything I had hoped to, and more. I appreciate the kind letters of support and consider 25% of the vote to be quite a good showing against a popular incumbent. I look forward to continuing as Central Region Vice-President, and to continue supporting Roy and the rest of the Executive Committee. I will leave my suggestions and concerns on my website for review, so that we may continue to question where we are and examine where we are going. Although strengthening our organization is more important that being president, per se, I still believe I have ideas and skills that can someday be beneficial in the position. So here's to growth, prosperity, and the continued strength of our collective efforts in the world of Go. It's been fun. Let's do it again in a few years... ONLINE GO: KGS "Open House" by Terri Schurter The teaching talents of Guo Juan 5p proved to be an excellent draw at Saturday's "Open House" on the KGS. During Guo's lesson and subsequent game reviews, traffic on KGS more than doubled, with 59 users logged onto the server at one point during the lesson. For this special event Guo Juan taught a regular monthly lesson to one of her students, a 16 kyu player whose server name is meki. She played an 8 stone handicap game with him making it open to anyone who wanted to observe (Lessons are usually conducted privately). During the game observers kibitzed in the English Room. Upon completion of the game, Guo Juan offered comments using the editing facilities of the server. Anyone unable to attend the event can still profit from the review: public games are preserved on the server and the web site. If you would like to view her lesson with meki, you can load it from her stats window and replay it in the English Room on the server. You can also save it to disk and view it offline in the sgf editor of your choice. You can see any of the other public games which Guo Juan has played on the KGS server by looking at the games within her stats window. You can find the stats window by selecting the "User" menu and "View User's Information" from the submenu. Type in the user name, which is "guojuan", in the dialogue box. In addition to making her lesson with maki public, Guo Juan was generous enough to review two existing games which had been played previously by some of the observers. She was able to do this without having to replay the game herself because on KGS you can load a game into the editor and comment it and even add variations which will remain a part of the record. She reviewed a game by two dan level players and a game between two 16 kyu players. For information about lessons with Guo Juan, visit her home page at http://home.wxs.nl/~guojuan/ KGS is still a sparsely populated environment, but it is beginning to get the attention it deserves. If you want to give it a try you might consider making an appointment to meet someone there for a game. http://kgs.kiseido.com Terri Schurter has been playing Go online since 1995. Her Go club, Wings Across Calm Waters, is a "virtual" chapter of the AGA. Wings meets week-nights on the Zone from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm Eastern Time. Terri plays under the name goddess_of_go. GO CLUBS: New Orleans, LA "We had a great turnout at Genghis Khan," reports New Orleans club organizer David Dinhofer. "Mr. Henry Lee, the owner of Genghis Khan has offered to let us use his restaurant as a meeting place every Wednesday. We will try this for awhile and see how it turns out." "We voted on the new name of the New Orleans Go Club and it will be the Bayou Go Club. At the end of the meeting, some of us stayed around and tossed around the name Sam Kuk suggested, "Go Saints"(including Dave Matson, who hated seeing the last remnant of the Crane's Nest Go Club go). We had second thoughts. We can always change it. It will only give our AGA sponsors a small headache. For now, it will be the Bayou Go Club. "The people who showed up included: Sam Kuk, Leigh Krycki, David Cope, Andrea Balser, Glenn Hedgpeth and his son, Travis, Craig Delery, Ray Davis, David Matson and myself. The range of strength present was from about 30k to 3D. Everyone played and had fun. "We elected yours truly as President, Treasurer and dictator of the club. Craig Delery kindly offered to set up and maintain a web page. We signed up three new members to the AGA; Henry Lee, David Cope and Leigh Krycki."
