"Already we have entries and enquiries from USA and expect at least 20 AGA members to play." "For those who want to contact me directly try john@mhg.ie. We hope to have details on our website soon of package deals including airfare and accommodation." http://ireland.european-go.rog/ YOUR TURN: Readers Write Strong Yang "It seems a typo here (10/30 report on the Cotsen Open): Mr. Yang is a 7-Dan pro, not 6 dan." - I-Han Lui QUITE RIGHT. THANKS FOR THE CORRECTION: WE REGRET THE ERROR. Events Calendar? "The AGA doesn't have a calendar of events on their USGO.org site do they? It would be a good idea if not." - Jonathan CHECK OUT HTTP://WWW.USGO.ORG/USA/TOURNAMENTS.HTML ONLINE GO: Building the Go Community The internet go servers, especially Yahoo and the Zone, have brought many new players to go who might not otherwise have ever been exposed to the game. Those who live in the United States are prime candidates for recruitment into The American Go Association, the national go organization in the U.S. Online players can do our part to welcome them to the game of go, encourage them to come out to tournaments, and to join the AGA. Recently I met a player on the Zone in my geographic area who was returning to go after a long absence. Fifteen years ago, he played at clubs on the West Coast, but had never actually been a member of the AGA, nor played in a tournament. This past Saturday, after a couple months of persuasion, he attended the Princeton self-paired tournament. I was there to do my part by giving him two stones and losing to him in his first tournament game. I may have lost a game, but I won a new member for The Wings Across Calm Waters Go Club. At the same tournament there were two college students who traveled all the way from Rochester (NY) to Princeton to play in their first tournament and to join the AGA. They estimated their entry ranks based on their IGS ratings of 24 kyu and 25 kyu, and were pleased to discover that they were actually much stronger than they thought. I can't take credit for encouraging them to attend the tournament, but maybe someone else did. If so, I thank you: we are three members stronger today than we were on Friday. Your assignment this week is to ask the people you play on line for their geographic location. If they are in the United States please ask if they are members of the American Go Association, and if not, direct them to a cool go site at http://www.usgo.org Terri Schurter has been playing Go online since 1995. Her Go club, Wings Across Calm Waters [http://wingsgoclub.hypermart.net], is a "virtual" chapter of the AGA. Wings meets week-nights on the Zone from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm Eastern Time. Terri plays under the name goddess_of_go. GO CLUBS: Hoboken, NJ; Rockville, MD; Tucson, AZ; Corvallis, OR 9-Dan Teaches in NJ "We are very fortunate to have Feng Yun, a 9 dan professional from China, living in New Jersey for the next few years," reports Larry Russ at the Hoboken Go Club. "Feng Yun has agreed to come to the Hoboken Go Club and give us some lessons; she is looking forward to working with our group of go players who are interested in improving their game. "The series of lessons will be six monthly lessons at a cost of $90 prepaid (at the first lesson) for the entire series. Single session visits are possible at a fee of $20. Larry Russ (201) 216-5379; lruss@stevens-tech.edu Small But Active in Rockville, MD "Every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month," reports AGA Membership Secretary John Goon, "go players get together at the Rockville Barnes & Noble (Rockville Pike and Randolph Road in the Montrose Crossing shopping center) to demonstrate and teach go to the public. We start at 7 PM and stay until 9. "The demos started in September and this coming Monday will be our 5th. The Go demos will be held through the month of March 2001 and the prospects for an indefinite extension are excellent. We will continue this program until we run out of volunteers. The public response has been superb, and includes the discovery of a new and avid player/activist. If you have the time, please stop by!" John Goon; jgoon@erols.com Cotsen Open, Tucson Club Photos on Web "I have put up some pictures from the Cotsen Open 2000 at www.5z.com/martin/cotsen2000," reports Tucson's Martin Lebl. "I have also put up some pictures from our Tucson Go Club meetings: www.5z.com/martin/tucsongo. Both of these are also available from our Tucson Go Club home page: www.5z.com/tucsongo Teaching Kids in Oregon "I was invited to speak to three 6th-grade humanities classes studying the history of China," reports Robert O'Malley in Corvallis, Oregon. "I was asked to let them have a chance at playing go, and to relate the history of go to the timeline they had for China. First came the history, then just enough of the rules that they understood how to capture. With ~30 6th-graders, their teacher, and sometimes a classroom assistant, we launched into "capture one" and, after a bit, "capture five". "Those who already knew how to play go were given the option to play full 9x9 games if they wished, or do the capture games. That covered the 45 minutes that I had in each class. "Those 6th-graders are now deciding if they would like an after-school go club, which would meet every other week. I hope they do. Along with their after-school meetings, there is an active go club in town, and a tournament scheduled each spring, so they will have plenty of room for contact, growth, and fun."
