This "anniversary" column provides an opportunity to reflect on the virtual and real worlds of go that the Congress represents for me. First of all, a big "thank you" to everyone who took the time to come up to me at this year's Congress to express their appreciation for the Online Go articles I've written over the past year. Originally, I imagined that I might write two months' worth of articles, and that everything worth saying about Online Go would have been said. However, the overwhelmingly positive response of Congress attendees to the column has convinced me that this is not the case, and that there is a real need to gently introduce some go players to the world on online go, and to keep the stream of information about online resources flowing for the rest of us. What does the U.S. Go Congress - the biggest physical go event of the year -- have to do with online go? It's about the people. The Congress is a place where I meet people in real life and turn them into online friends. It is a place where I make face to face contact with people I played online, and turn those people into real-life friends. In fact, as I mingled at the Congress last week it was sometimes easy to forget if a friend's acquaintance was first made online, or over the board. This year I met several people who I first came to know well through contact on one or more of the go servers. My first Go Congress was in Lancaster in 1997. It was also my first tournament. I came to it knowing only a handful of people through their online personae. Only after playing go online for two years was I brave enough to seek out go players in real life. A friend attended his first Congress this year. He and I had attended two Yang Workshops together, but I had actually forgotten that it was on the Gaming Zone that I had first made his acquaintance. He told me that I had been one of the first people to play with him shortly after he had taught himself how to play go a little over two years ago. It is things like this that make me realize how the online go world and the real life go world support each other. For a look at the last year's worth of Online Go columns, check out the archive maintained by the British Go Association at http://www.britgo.org/gopcres/agaart/index.html Terri Schurter -- onlinego@usgo.org -- has been playing go online since 1995. Her club, Wings Across Calm Waters [http://www.wingsgoclub.org], is a "virtual" chapter of the AGA. Wings meets week-nights on the Zone from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm Eastern Time, and on Wednesday nights at 8P on KGS. Terri plays under the name goddess_of_go. Past columns are archived at http://www.britgo.org/gopcres/agaart/index.html The views expressed in this column are not necessarily those of the American Go Association.
