GO NEWS Yang Beats Cha in Toyota Oza Playoff Huiren Yang beat Jimmy Cha in the Toyota Oza playoff yesterday on the IGS by 1 ? points. Yang will join the 32-player field competing in the Toyota Denso Oza Cup in March in Japan. First prize in the knock-out tournament is $300,00 and a brand-new Toyota Lexus. Stay tuned! O Rissei Beats Ryu Shikun in Kisei Round 1 O Rissei beat Ryu Shikun in the first round of the Kisei title match in London yesterday, reports British Go Association Secretary Tony Atkins. 4th Environmental Go Match Set Naiwei Rui will play Jujo Jiang on January 25 in the fourth 9-dan demonstration of Environmental Go. At each move, the Environmental Go player needs to make a quantitative assessment of the value of moving on the board, and then compare it to the value of the largest available coupon. This intriguing variant of the game is at the crossroads of Go, the Mathematical Theory of Combinatorial Games, and Expert Systems. Several theorems are known about certain versions of Environmental Go endgames, and some early implementations of some of them have appeared in some programs which compete in computer Go tournaments. The match will take place at the North American Ing Center, 887 Oak Grove Ave., Suite 203 in Menlo Park, CA and will be broadcast live on the internet. Youth Go Camp Correction For information on the 2002 Youth Go Camp, contact Director Peter Rzepecki at AGAGoCamp@aol.com or rzepecki@stsltd.com. Beginner's Open House Scheduled in Rockville, MD An Open House for beginners is scheduled for this Friday, 1/18/02 at the Rockville (MD) Chess & Go Group @ the Pump House. "Six brand new students (ages 8-14) are signed up," reports organizer John Goon (jgoon@erols.com). "We will be using a large magnetic demo teaching board, and there will be food and drinks for the occasion. If we can secure the interest of these new children, it will give our core youth group (four boys at the moment) a tremendous boost. We now start at 7:30P on Friday evenings." I Hear You Knocking, But You Can't Come In "Login procedures have changed recently at the Gaming Zone and more than a few people are having difficulty with them," reports Online Go columnist Terri Schurter. "The quickest route to the Zone -- http://www.zone.com -- appears to be the acquisition of a Hotmail account, which provides you with the Microsoft Passport you now need. Then be sure to check in at your Hotmail account before trying to log onto the Zone, which will log you onto the Zone when you go from your Hotmail account url to the Zone url. If the Zone login process is attempted without first logging into a Passport Account you can get caught in an endless loop when you are prompted to login at the Zone itself again and again." "If you have not been to the Zone lately, but have a user name you would like to retrieve," notes Schurter, "you might want to login soon, or you may end up losing your user name altogether." a/s/l Explained "a/s/l" asks Chuck "What? I am confused." (ONLINE GO 1/7/02). "a/s/l means age/sex/location," explains Terri Schurter, who listed "People who type a/s/l" as one of the "10 Things I Hate About Online Go" last week. "It is most often typed on the Gaming Zone." Cho Hunhyun Life and Master Games Now Available A collection of thoroughly commented games by Cho Hunhyun, one of the top current Korean players. Is now available from Slate & Shell, www.slateandshell.com. "Life and Master Games" was originally published by Ishi and Nemesis. A CD with sgf files of the games can also be acquired with the new book. Cho's opponents include many of the most famous contemporary players, and he comments on their styles and attitudes as well as their play.
