"Black has more moyo potential and White has less space to run out," notes Yilun Yang, 7p, in just one of his many comments on the exciting game between Ke Huang, 6d and I-han Lui, 7d. Full memberships in the AGA were up 35 and Limited memberships were up 33 as of early this week; total membership now stands at 1,516. Since these figures do not include at least 80 new memberships that have yet to be processed, January's final figures may well prove to be the largest single-month membership jump in the history of the American Go Association. AGA President Roy Laird credits the popular film "A Beautiful Mind" with sparking the surge of interest in Go, as well as the revamped AGA website and the free weekly American Go EJournal with successfully capitalizing on the new interest in the game. "We're making it easy and fun to join the wonderful world of Go," says Laird, "and we're pleased to welcome all of our new members and Ejournal subscribers. We'll continue working hard to provide the Go news, instruction and support that will help our community grow." For more information on the American Go Association, go to www.usgo.org Go Review Now Online The E-Journal reviews of Go books, software and equipment are now archived at http://www.usgo.org/ejournal/ejournal_reviews.html Organized alphabetically, the reviews -- which were originally published in the Ejournal's "Go Review" column, cover a wide range of material, from basic instructional to advanced books, as well as useful Go software and equipment. To contribute reviews - or to suggest a subject for review - email us at journal@usgo.org Journal Corrections The title of the essay "Dr. Emanuel Lasker and the game of Go" in the Fall 2001/Winter 2002 American Go Journal (p. 38) is incorrect. Edward Lasker, the American Go Grandmaster who was also one of the founders of the American Go Association is frequently mistaken for Emanuel Lasker, the subject of the essay, who was not American. We regret the error and thank John Goon for bringing it to our attention, as well as for bringing us the original essay itself. The photos of the 2001 Texas Open (pp. 3 & 4) were taken by Kasia Koenig of Plano, Texas, not Mike Peng. YOUR MOVE: Readers Write Feeding An Addiction "The AGA's EJournal was already the most anticipated email in my Inbox," writes Mark Lentczner. "It was already the case that any time the subject "AMERICAN GO EJOURNAL" flashed up in my email program, I dropped everything to open and read the message. As you might imagine, this can be quite embarrassing at work if I'm on the phone, or worse, meeting with someone in my office." "Now you've gone and made matters worse," says Lentczner "The inclusion of game records has greatly deepened my condition. I find myself blocking out time on my calendar at work on the days the EJournal is due. This morning I'm leaving home hours before I need to go to work so I can go to a local coffee house and play through the game (I transfer them to my hand-held Visor, view them with the PilotGOne SGF viewer, and play them out on a portable magnetic set. I'm quite the sight in our local cafe!)." "My Go addiction thanks you mightily for the game records and eagerly awaits more," Lentczner concludes, noting that his AGA rating is up two points. A year later, after reading a column called "A Taste for Thicknesss" in some old Go Worlds, I realized how painfully sketchy was my understanding of this fundamental way of thinking. Returning to Utilizing Outward Influence was a logical step. This time the book, which admittedly is not written in as lucid a style as I might wish, began to slowly yield its secrets. Chapter 1 is entitled "The Basic Concept of Outward Influence." It sort of plows the ground. The problems in Chapter 2 plant the seeds of understanding. They show the fruit of contrasting approaches to specific situations where outward influence can be developed or exploited. See the right way, then the wrong ways, and let the differences sink in. I am not yet ready for the advanced problems, which claim to be dan level. The elementary problems are hard enough for me. Chapter 3 says that good players seize control of the center. It deals with whole board thinking in the use of influence. By beating my head repeatedly against the examples, I am gaining a bit of happy knowledge. If you too are happy after struggling hard to gain new knowledge, then this may be a good book for you. Available at yutopian.com for $14.00 + $1.50 s/h.
