Fujisawa Hosai, 9p takes black against Sakata Eio, 9p, with commentary by Hashimoto Utaro 9p. "The choice between this point and one point below is a matter of one's personal understanding of Go. Both are good.," says Hashimoto in one of his many comments on this game. To view the attached game record (02.19.02 Go Review VIII #2.sgf), simply save the file to your computer and then open it using an .sgf reader such as Many Faces of Go or SmartGo. Readers who need .sgf readers can get them for most platforms at Jan van der Steen's http://gobase.org/sgfeditors.html We're pleased to offer this enhanced edition of the Ejournal to our members; to get the Member's Edition with attached game records, join the AGA at http://www.usgo.org/org/application.html GO NEWS Go Player Challenges Cuba Ban Go player John Harriman testified before Congress last week, one of several witnesses to appear before the Senate Appropriations Treasury subcommittee, which is examining what Chairman Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) called an "ill-advised" policy that has done little or nothing to undermine the 43-year-old communist regime of Fidel Castro. Harriman was part of last year's historic delegation in January to visit Cuban Go players, a visit that earned him a $7,500 fine for "trading with the enemy" by violating a prohibition against conducting any financial transactions (i.e. spending money) in Cuba. Civil rights groups say enforcement of the ban is selective; 200,000 Americans visited Cuba last year but only 766 were fined by the U.S. government. Harriman testified in support of lifting the ban, and at last week's hearing Sen. Dorgan said he was committed to bringing the issue to a vote this year. Beautiful Minds In St Louis, San Diego & The UK "I'm the keeper of the equipment. I have several sets in my car," St. Louis Go Club organizer Jason Taff told the St Louis Post-Dispatch last Friday. The Post-Dispatch dubbed Taff "the go-to guy of the St. Louis Go Club" thanks to his "Have boards, will travel" motto. The story promoted the local club, the American Go Association and the U.S. Go Congress in a sidebar article to the syndicated story on Go in "A Beautiful Mind" that's been popping up around the country. Meanwhile, in San Diego, Neal Burstein reports that "we had contact from a TV news crew to do a story on Go last week. We staged a 'special' meeting of our club on a Friday morning so the story could air that evening for the weekend. The reporter and cameraman took about two hours to do a very nice piece on the game, interviewing four players, and capturing on film the exciting details of pulling stones from kei, snapping them on the board, etc." And after seeing the "Beautiful Mind" write-ups in the E-Journal, Tony Lyall in England suggested to his UK colleagues that with the movie opening there it might be a good idea to put up "a good colourful Go poster in the relevant cinemas with a contact address? Assuming the management agrees of course. I would like to start a small campaign related to the film," Lyall said. "You never know..." KGS Chinese Go Club "The Chinese Go Club on KGS (http://kgs.kiseido.com) meets every Thursday at 8P EST," writes Xiaopeng Zhao. "During the club meeting, we will chat, play, do life and death problems, and have strong players present and comment on games. We have players from beginners to high dan level players, so you can easily find your challenge there. Come and join us for the fun on Thursday night! It's a great way to make friends and improve Go." The navigational structure is provided by simple text links along the left of the page, with no distracting background to take away from the information being provided. An "instruction" link describes the classes offered by the center. An "introduction" link gives a brief description of the rules of the game. A "membership" link explains the dues structure including options for infrequent use of the club. The "newsletter" link reports that the latest edition of the newsletter "The Yomi" will be out soon and offers pdf versions of issues 1, 2, 3 and 4 for online viewing or printing. The "organization" link lists the staff, contact information, and hours of operation, which are quite impressive. The center is open for eight or more hours every day of the week except Monday when the center is closed. The "tournaments" link lists four tournaments in table format, two of which are yet to occur. This page sports an AGA banner link, which will take you to the AGA home page. The "web sites" link, however, is a bit sparse with only four links provided. The Seattle Go Center home page is an attractive and current page with much useful information about the offerings of an active go club. Everyone should be so lucky to have a club like this in their neighborhood. This is the first in a series of articles examining web pages of some of the chapters of the American Go Association. If you have a chapter page that you are proud of, and would like to have covered, please email me at onlinego@usgo.org with the name of your club and the url of your page. Terri Schurter -- onlinego@usgo.org -- has been playing go online since 1995. Her club, Wings Across Calm Waters [http://www.wingsgoclub.org], is a "virtual" chapter of the AGA. Wings meets week-nights on the Zone from 8-10P EST, and on Wednesday nights at 8P on KGS. Terri plays under the name goddess_of_go. Past columns are archived at http://www.britgo.org/gopcres/agaart/index.html The views expressed in this column are not necessarily those of the American Go Association. GET LISTED & BOOST TURN-OUT!
