The game with Keith Arnold, 4d, was played February 2 at the Pennsylvania Open in Lancaster, PA. Featuring the comments of Yuan Zhou, a professionally-trained player, this game provides terrific lessons in the power of steady, patient moves. "A visit from Karlin Kreindler, a National Cherry Blossom Festival Good Will Ambassador, also helped. Four people ended up with perfect 4-0 scores, and several sections needed tie breakers, up to and including a coin toss. The most popular prizes were bonsai cherry trees, and carrying bags of many sizes. We are looking forward to breaking the 50 player mark next year!" KGS: March Wings League "The Wings March KGS League finished up with 'playgo,' one of our Netherlands members, making a rush from behind, and securing first place with 41 earned points," reports John Stephenson. "Runner up is our young New Jersey dynamo, 'Lionel,' with 37 earned points, and third place went to 'Forbais,' a New York State player, with 27 earned points." Stephenson reports that the April KGS League is now beginning, and a Game Zone Spring League has also been started. Register now and post your offers to play at http://www.wingsgoclub.org GO NEWS MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT! A Message from President Roy Laird A letter from the AGA will soon arrive in your mailbox, containing a ballot that can change the future of the AGA. Please take this opportunity to get involved and express your opinion! Revisions to the AGA governing documents have been proposed for the first time since the AGA incorporated nine years ago. Under the proposed new system, an elected Board of Directors would elect all officers, including the President. (The President and Regional VPs are currently selected by weighted vote of chapters. The electoral structure remains unchanged.) The revisions also include new language to prevent conflict of interests and numerous other changes. To view the changes, go to http://www.usgo.org/governance/proposed_gov_revisions.doc To review discussion of the proposed changes, go to http://www.usgo.org/governance/index.asp Talk to your friends in the AGA about what the changes mean. Contact any officer with questions or comments you may have. Then express yourself! The ballot you will find in your letter has a stamp already affixed. All you have to do is mark your preference and mail it in! Prizes, Massages & Refundable Fees at Cotsen The 2002 Cotsen Open, scheduled for Sunday April 27 & 28 in Los Angeles, provides plenty of incentives for attending, besides the opportunity to participate in an excellent field of players. The $20 entry fee will fully refunded Sunday afternoon to players attending both days, and anyone pre-registering qualifies for the free luxury lunch buffet on both days. There's also a $1000 cash prize for the winning Go club, all players receive a limited AGA membership absolutely free just for playing the entire weekend and prizes will be awarded to those who can solve certain Go problems. There's more: professional Go players Yi-Lun Yang and others will review and comment on your games and there will be a pro game over the Internet between Yi-Lun Yang, 7P and Yigang Hua, 8P. And, while you toil away at your games two masseuses will be making the rounds to ease the tensions that arise in your shoulders (when you discover, for example, that your big group really doesn't have two eyes.) Beginners and children are especially welcome as are kids, friends, relatives and acquaintances. The Bob High Memorial Library, named in honor of the late AGA Membership Secretary and (briefly) President, includes all sorts of articles touching on Go from many angles -- culture, history, psychology, mathematics and humor, to name a few. You can also view or download the AGA Song Book, containing many fine Go-theme parodies of popular songs. Stephenson 201-612-0852 jcs@wingsgoclub.org Go at Teatime "My dad played Go at Princeton during the 40's, the same time John Nash was there," writes Douglas Ridgway. Ridgway's father writes that "Go was a vigorous recreation for math and physics graduate students in the late 40's when I was there. Chess was displaced. One math professor had international ranking. I was pretty average, but handicapping allowed me some fun in playing with the big boys. I do not remember John Nash playing Go, but we traveled in different circles." At tea time, according to Ridgway's father, there would be a big rush for the four Go boards set up in the common room used by physics and math grad students, and games and conversation would continue until people wandered down to dinner around six. "It's a little difficult to judge the level of play from his recollections," says Ridgway, who says his father tells him "High level players would put stones all over the board. I was much more tactical -- someone would place a stone, and I'd put one down right next to it." There were no written materials studied, in any language, according to Ridgway's father, "But the existence of the 'internationally ranked' player certainly implies some knowledge diffusion. It'd be interesting to find any records of games from this period." Font Problem? "Any chance of sending out the Go Journal in a font size larger than 8?" pleads Richard. "My old eyes can't read it. Please email us at journal@usgo.org ONLINE GO: Bayou Go Club by Terri Schurter The Bayou Go Club is located in New Orleans. Its web site is at http://www.historicalshop.com/bayougo/club.htm#contact , and was last updated on March 15. At the top of the page is a graphic showing a picture of a bayou and the skyline of New Orleans. On either side are the following links: "about us", "contact us", "meetings", "club news", "members", "what is go?", "club ladder", "tournaments", "go links", and "play online". The "play online" link offers seven links to various Go servers. The "links" page offers links in a number of categories including introductory pages, learning Go, Go news, Go clubs, and online stores. The "members" link lists rank and email information for 22 members of the club. The "club ladder" link shows the relative positions of 20 members of the ladder and includes a very detailed description of the administration of the ladder. This is the most developed area of the site and the level of detail would suggest that this is an important aspect of the club. If you are considering instituting a club ladder, you might want to take a look. GET LISTED & BOOST TURN-OUT! Got an upcoming event? Reach over 3,000 readers every week!
