GameBoy Go "I have searched the Internet for Go games on Playstation & Game Boy," writes Jay. "I know they have some, but unfortunately I just can't find them." Editor's Note: please send info to us at journal@usgo.org GO CLUBS NoVa Foiled by Pests The Northern Virginia (NoVa) Go Club will not meet tonight and is temporarily seeking new digs; the church where they now meet just discovered a major termite infestation, and clean up could take up to two months. Anyone with a convenient alternate meeting location should email Allan Abramson at mediate8@worldnet.att.net All Roads Lead to Hoboken "If you are coming to Sunday's tournament from the south (NJ Turnpike, Rte. 280, or Rte1/9), you should know that Washington St in Hoboken is closed from Observer Highway to 8th St for a street fair," warns Larry Russ. "When following the driving directions from the website, just turn left onto Bloomfield St. one block before Washington St......all else is the same." Larry also asks that players pre-register by email if you have not already done so: lruss@stevens-tech.edu GO NEWS Feng Yun Website Now Online Feng Yun, the former world champion and national champion of China, has become more and more popular and well-known as a teacher since moving to the U.S. last year. Participants will gather at the Paul Kee Restaurant afterwards for dinner and conversation. Go Could Spark New Generation of Computers Could Go lead to a whole new generation of computers? An article by Michael Brooks in the April 13 edition of The New Scientist suggests this may be the case. The difficulty of programming Go could indicate something fundamental about the limitations of today's computers, according to Jonathan Schaeffer, a researcher at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. "It illustrates that there are two architectures for intelligence," Schaeffer says. While chess reveals the strength of the computer's architecture and the weakness of the brain's, Go is just the reverse. The article suggests that programmers trying to build a stronger Go-playing programs "may find that there's such a fundamental difference between the way the human brain and computers work that only a completely different kind of machine will turn out to be a winner - perhaps more advanced neural networks that are capable of learning as they play." The page features a blue left side border with links alongside a main area of the page with a wooden textured background. When you first log on you are taken to the "News" link, which gives the results of a recent tournament. The upcoming May Workshop with Yilun Yang is mentioned there as well. You will also find news about a new feature of the site, which is the ability to link to members' KGS ratings graphs, as well as a request for pictures from tournaments to enhance the site. The "About" link gives background information concerning the formation of the University of Michigan Go Club, and mentions its closely associated club, the Ann Arbor Go Club. The "Meetings" link gives the time and location of meetings. Under the Members' Page link 18 players are listed. So far only two members have taken advantage of having their names linked to their KGS ratings graphs, but this feature is definitely a nice touch which other clubs might want to try. The "Links" link lists Kiseido, telgo, The American Go Association, and goproblems.com. This is a small group of sites, but a good start. You can also find out about the University of Michigan by following a link to the University web site. GET LISTED & BOOST TURN-OUT! Got an upcoming event? Reach nearly 4,000 readers every week!
