(unofficial) American Go E-Journal archive

Go game commentary

Beginning in 2002, a "games edition" of the American Go E-Journal includes email attachments providing game analysis and other instructional material in sgf and pdf format. These are a benefit of AGA membership, so I honor the AGEJ editor's request not to publish them on my website. However, a few 2002 "public editions" did include commented game records -- perhaps to show non-members what they're missing -- and these are published here.

Around September 2002, AGEJ started using an online mail manager service to send the public edition. It cannot send attachments, so for the forseeable future, the occasional commented games will not appear in the public edition. However, the "Members Edition" (now called the "Games Edition") of the AGEJ is sent differently, and still routinely includes game records, tsumego problems, and other goodies; and now you can sign up for the special Games Edition of the American Go E-Journal for just $20a year, at http://www.usgo.org/org/application.asp (select "Games Edition").

These records are in the Smart Game Format, also called SGF. Sometimes the original game record uses an outdated version of SGF or has minor syntax errors, so to ensure that the most players can enjoy these files, I include both the original game record and a copy that I ran through the SGF Validator.

For links to software which will display SGF records, see jansteen's GoBase, the BGA software list, or the discussion at Sensei's Library.
For information on the Smart Game Format itself, see the SGF official site.

The American Go Association publishes the American Go E-Journal weekly, via email. It has go-related news, announcements, reviews, letters, classifieds, an "Online Go" column, AGA contact info, etc. AGA membership is is encouraged and appreciated, but not required (except for the additional material in the Members' Edition). Please enjoy my unofficial AGEJ archive, and feel free to contact me with suggestions for improvement.

Search the AGEJ archive (note, text in SGF files is not indexed):
Simple search matches partial words (searching for "seki" also finds "fuseki" and "joseki").

Boolean: Case
Sophisticated search is case-insensitive, and does not match partial words; but the * wildcard will match truncations up to 6 characters.
