Four-way Go match, Aug. 18, 2002

A little more than halfway through the game --
Peter's got the blue stones (what a huge area; what lovely thickness!). Mike LePore has the white stones (also a huge area!). Tyler has the black stones (how'd he make so many groups live?). Mike Malveaux (that's me) is limping along with the copper-colored stones (those dastards ended up with a seki in my corner! but I was behind already). Four-color go and snacks at Peter's place

The board was handmade by Peter from an old cutting board; the black and white stones are the Chinese style, flat on one side, with beautiful jade bowls. Peter got the blue and copper colored glass "stones" from a craft supplies store.

It was fun, and I'll gladly try it again; but I think I prefer regular two-player go, or pair go. Tactics were oddly complicated by the need to defend against multiple players ganging up on you (for example, the bamboo joint can be cut; and monkey jumps are just plain evil). Strategic considerations were strangely impacted by players negotiating temporary alliances for mutual benefit. Ko didn't really arise, but seems to work (almost) normally. All in all, it was kind of mind-bending, and tended to bring out our latent paranoia. :-D

Thanks for reading! Best wishes; - Mike Malveaux
