HilltopGo: Event Reports
We Tacoma go players are an active bunch. When not playing against
each other, we like to venture forth to battle players from other
locales; which is a lot of fun. We can often be found at
the Seattle Go Center's
frequent tournaments, and we've played (in tournaments and
informally) all up and down the West Coast -- Los Angeles,
San Francisco, Portland and vicinity, Tacoma/Seattle, and
British Columbia -- and in Asia (Roy Hayashi in Japan,
Mike LePore in Hong Kong, Gordon Castanza in Hong Zhou) and
Europe (Tyler Sellon in Hungary).
Three of us attended the 2002 US Go Congress in Chicago. Most
of us attended the 2005 Congress (easy, since it was in Tacoma :-).
Mike Malveaux played in the Toyota Denso Oza in New York in
January 2006. Solomon Choe played in the 8th Canada West (Hai - Hwa Cup)
in May 2006, and he is spending July 2006 studying Go in China.
Though not every event attended is detailed here, I'll try to get a
description and pictures up here of especially memorable tournaments etc.;
and you may find some details in the old news
pages. If you're from (or visiting) the Puget Sound area, please email your
event reports to tacomagofiend@yahoo.com
for inclusion here.
Please see the Tacoma Go News Page
or the calendar
for upcoming scheduled events.
- 2002 | 2002 - 2003 - 2004 - 2005 - 2006
- Jan. 20: First Usual Tournament, Tacoma WA, US
- Pictures from the first Tacoma go tournament (as far as I know; if there's older Tacoma go history, please tell me!). Not AGA rated.
- Apr. 27-28: Cotsen Open & Handicap Tournament, Los Angeles CA, US
- About a dozen Seattle-area players voyaged south to enjoy this excellent tournament, including two from Tacoma.
- June 30: visit to Seattle Chinese Go Club, Federal Way WA, US
- Those guys are strong! Half a dozen photos of players enjoying games and Ma Dong's superb hospitality.
- Aug. 18: 4-way go, Tacoma WA, US
- Tyler, Mike, Mike, and Peter had a confusing -- but great -- time at Peter Baker's house. Thanks again, Peter!
- Aug. 31 - Sep. 1: Canadian Open, Richmond BC, CA
- I have about a dozen pictures of Seattle and Tacoma players at this excellent event -- just need time to add them to Mike LePore's report... Meanwhile, you can visit the Canadian Go Association and see their description.
- Oct. 20: Party at Roy's place
- Alas, my camera chip was full... didn't get any pictures. But what a wonderful time we had -- thanks again, Connie and Roy! And thanks to the Federal Way folks for making it great with their presence!
- 2003 | 2002 - 2003 - 2004 - 2005 - 2006
- Feb. 23: Party at Roy's place -- happy 87, Roy!
- Forgot my camera... but Greg and Mike L probably got some pictures. Great food, great company, and the world's greatest game... How could it get any better?
- Mar. 29: Tacoma / UPS Chapter Inaugural Tournament
- Local and regional Go clubs gave us strong support in our first AGA-rated tournament. Steve Stringfellow did a great job directing a field that included no less than six amateur 6-dans!
- July 13: Party at Roy's
- Go players from Tacoma, Seattle, Kent, Bellevue, and Olympia met at Connie and Dance's house to celebrate Roy's improving health. Sadly, Roy wasn't there to enjoy the party, because he was back in the hospital -- nothing serious, but the doctors wanted to make sure. As usual, Connie's cooking was superb, and a good time was had by all -- though we missed Roy's presence.
- July 27: Chinese Garden Midsummer Festival
- Demonstrating our game to Song Mei Pavillion festival-goers.
- Aug. 3: Wish We Were There Tournament
- A consolation tournament for those of us who can't make it to the U.S. Go Congress in Houston.
- Aug. 12-13: Saijo-sensei lectured at SGC
- Mr. Saijo, 8-dan professional from Japan, is a popular Go teacher, especially gifted at introducing the game to neophytes. After the Go Congress, he lectured at Seattle Go Center.
- Aug. 23: Road Trip to Poulsbo
- We'd heard that go players can be found at the Poulsbohemian Coffeehouse, so a few of us drove up for some games. Unfortunately, the regulars weren't around -- they must stick to the Tuesday game nights. But we had fun anyway, seeing Steve Fortner again, and meeting Jerry, a kyu player from the nearby Navy base.
- Sep. 20: Tournament at PLU (Chinese Culture Day)
- The Wang Center for International Programs at PLU invited us to have a tournament at their Chinese culture festival.
- Oct. 25: Fall Tournament at UPS
- 4 rounds, registration at 10 a.m.; in the Student Union Bldg.
- Nov. 1-2: Portland Open
- 5 rounds over 2 days, Ing rules. Edward Kim, Om Ki, and Jeff Horn cleaned up the Dan division. South Sound! Woot! Woot!
- 2004 | 2002 - 2003 - 2004 - 2005 - 2006
- Jan. 14-18: Kisei and Toyota/Denso N.A. Oza
- Seattle was honored to host the first game of the 28th Kisei title match between Hane Naoki and Yamashita Keigo. The next day, 85 players jammed the Seattle Go Center to play in the Toyota / Denso North American Oza tournament (held simultaneously in New York) -- 6 rounds in 2 days, and the winner of the Open division gets to compete for $300,000 in Japan.
- Feb. 28: Roy Hayashi Memorial Tournament
- What better way to remember Roy, than with a tournament? 3 rounds at University of Puget Sound; TD - Jeff Horn.
- Oct. 23: Seattle Chinese Go Club - Team Tournament
- 1:00 p.m. at David Ma's house in Federal Way -- contact Gordon or Mike for more info.
- 2005 | 2002 - 2003 - 2004 - 2005 - 2006
- August: 21st U.S. Go Congress
- Yes, this is lame... I have some pics, I'll try to get a semi-proper report up here soon...
- September 13: Party at Gordon's
- A bunch of us enjoyed Gordon's Castanza's hospitality at his new house in Gig Harbor. Connie Hayashi-Smith was there to make sure the food was great! I took some photos.
- October: International City GO Championship, Hong Zhou, China
- Gordon Castanza took photos at International City Go Championship.
- October 22-23: Portland Open
- Same weekend Gordon was in China. I went down with Jon Boley; also Steve Stringfellow, and some Seattle players... Chance Reimer beat me like a drum.
- 2006 | 2002 - 2003 - 2004 - 2005 - 2006
- Jan. 1: New Year's Day at the Hayashi-Smith's
- Roy's daughter Connie held a New Year's reception, and invited us to come by for food and games. It was wonderful, of course. I saw Tyler Sellon and Mike LePore, among others. (It's still odd to not see Roy. I guess it always will be.)
- Jan. 14-15: Kisei and Toyota/Denso N.A. Oza
- I attended the one in New York. A good time was had by all. My camera died on me, so no pics. Overall I won 4 games and lost 3.
- Jan. 21: Salem Go Tournament
- I won 1 game and lost 2. It was good to hang out with the Oregon go folks again, right up to the mad dash to the Amtrak station so the guy from Eugene could get home. (Glad the Suburban waited another week to die!)
- May 28: 8th Canada West Go Tournamest, Hai - Hwa Cup, Burnaby, BC, Canada
- Solomon Choe played. I'll try to get a report from him.
- June 17: Tacoma Late Spring Tournament, PLU, Tacoma
- Lightly attended due to numerous schedule conflicts, but there were a couple of new faces.
Solomon Choe, Gordon Castanza, and Dong Chunlei had the best scores.
