Kisei Title Match and Toyota/Denso North American Oza
January 14-18, 2004: Seattle, Washington, USA
Seattle has hosted some fairly large Go events
before (U.S. Go Congress in 1992, for example), but having the first game of the
Kisei-sen was a special treat.
I believe there was a reception Wednesday evening, January 14 (I had to work).
The first part of the game was played Thursday January 15. The game ended
Friday January 16, when
Yamashita Keigo
(the 2003 champion) resigned to
Hane Naoki (the challenger).
The game was played in a room with tatami mats at the
Fairmont Olympic Hotel.
Meanwhile, a few miles away at the
Seattle Go Center, dozens
of local amateur players watched the match on a large projection screen,
and tried to follow along and analyze the game.
Michael Redmond
(celebrated as the first Western-born professional 9-dan) was in town
for the occasion, and he gave commentary on the game.
The American Go E-Journal covered the event:
Day 1 -
Day 2
Seattle-area players posted some
reports and impressions of the Kisei game
on rec.games.go.
I need to write this up before I've completely forgotten. Some details I remember
two years later, at the 2006 Toyota / Denso Oza in New York, when I should be sleeping
in preparation for the second day of play:
- I had broken my leg snowboarding, and I was getting around on crutches
- I won some games, and lost some
- High-schooler Ariana von Elbe was there, all the way from Florida
- It was a wonderful time
Photos of both events, jumbled together
One of these days, I'll try to add some sensible structure to this...
but don't hold your breath...
Thanks for reading! Best wishes; - Mike Malveaux
