Tacoma Go Club held our "Late Spring" tournament on June 17, at
Pacific Lutheran University, site of last year's Go Congress. Only
10 players attended, mostly because of schedule conflicts. Perhaps
we should have chosen the date earlier and done more to publicize it.
For example, it never made it onto the AGA events listing webpage
(though it was listed in the E-Journal). Also, it would have been
good to not conflict with the NAMT, and to play when Steve
Stringfellow was not in Boston...
On a more positive note, there were two new faces. I'm pretty sure I've seen Tim Woodcock at the Seattle Go Center, but not at Tacoma tournaments, though he lives pretty close (Puyallup). Gary Metcalf had been at the 2005 Go Congress, and he renewed his AGA membership to play with us at PLU.
I used Chuck Robbins' program, WinTD, for the pairings. It had easily imported the most recent TD list at 5 a.m., so I was surprised when Dennis Wheeler told me his rating was out of date. Apparently, the Cherry Blossom results from April had finally made their way into the ratings search engine, but had not yet been incorporated into the TD list. So, I bumped Dennis' rating by a stone. The same thing happened with Tim Woodcock, but I somehow didn't realize it until later, so he ended up playing as a 4k.
I had once heard that WinTD makes the "championship" pairings in the penultimate round. In our case, I told WinTD there would be 4 rounds. So David Ma and Chunlei Dong, our strongest players at 6-dan and 5-dan respectively, faced each other in the third round. Usually we would want that match in the final round. So the advice I had gotten, but forgotten until too late, was to tell WinTD that there would be one more round than there actually was. I need to keep a notebook on these things...
Anyway, pairings were smooth enough until the 4th round. Then, because the field was so small, and the rating spread so large (18-kyu to 6-dan), it took a few minutes to match players with opponents they had not already faced.
Solomon Choe and Gordon Castanza each won 3 of 4 games, to take first and second place respectively based on SOS and SODOS. Chunlei Dong, Dong Ma, Mike Malveaux, and Tim Woodcock all won 2 of 4 games. Chunlei took third place with the best SOS and SODOS. Dennis Wheeler and Gary Metcalf each scored 1 win. Chergai Castanza and Monica Malveaux also scored 1 win apiece, to come in tied for the Youth Prize.
Gordon is having trophy plaques made. They should be ready by the time this is on the web.
Special thanks to Jon Boley and Seattle Go Center for loaning us equipment.
