Playing go in the sunshine

"Wish We Were There"

Go Tournament in Tacoma, for those who couldn't attend the U.S. Go Congress in Houston

It was a great day of go -- even if many of the games were high-handicap games, which the strong dans from Seattle Chinese Go Club tolerated with excellent humor; and even though the practicing cheerleaders did get a bit loud for a while. (It takes more than cheerleaders to distract a go player!)
Results are below. On a separate page are pictures from the tournament.

graph shows strength of field -- 5 players 4-dan and stronger Ten players made it to our tournament. Perhaps some would-be attendees were deterred by traffic, as I-5 had half its lanes closed for heavy construction. As with our Inaugural Tournament in March, the field was remarkably strong, thanks to the four 4-dan + players from the Seattle Chinese Go Club, who showed remarkable grace and patience in enduring the high handicap games that resulted from such a lopsided field.

Pairing was done with Paul Matthews' AccelRat software, which seems to prefer handicaps that seem too small; so some manual adjustments were made. (It turns out that there's a command to control this behavior. Too bad the TD hadn't understood the documentation! Oh well, next time.) Time control was by Ing digital clock, so instead of Canadian overtime of 20 stones in 5 minutes, we used Japanese-style byo-yomi of 5 periods of 15 seconds each. I thought that would correspond well to an average of 15 seconds per stone, but in actual practice it seemed a little too fast.

We held the first rounds outdoors, using the tables near the cafeteria, since the weather was nice. Unfortunately, we were smack in the middle of a summer camp for cheerleaders. Who knew that they would practice their cheers while waiting in line for food? Of course, it was only a distraction for the players who had finished their games; it takes more than a few hundred screaming, jumping cheerleaders to take a go player's attention from the board. Later, when the early evening chilled us, we moved inside to the classroom that Greg had reserved.

There are a few pictures shot during the second round.
