Go began in China ~4000 years ago, and today is best known as a strategy game enjoyed by millions of people around the world.
The rules are very simple, yet give rise to emergent properties which create ~10^(7.5^48) possible game combinations.
The game is traditionally played by two players who take turns placing black or white "stones" on a board in order to surround territory, or the other player's stones. To play, one must use both logic and intuition, exercising both right and left hemispheres of the brain.
Go is also a sophisticated cognitive and psychological tool. The applications of Go range from early childhood development, to geriatric therapy (here again, and here) to artificial intelligence research.
